Narrow DOF (Depth of Field)

Depth of field shows the range of a shape and clear image. By adjusting the aperture and focus everything in the front and the rear of the image starts to lose its sharpness. 

 

Wide angel lenses are better at creating DOF (Depth of field) than Telephoto lenses as with a wide angle you can get the subject in the image and the foreground and surrounding objects etc. By adjusting your settings you can achieve DOF on the subject matter and the rest is out of focus. 

Setting the aperture at a large aperture so that you are letting in more light gives more Depth of field & the closer the subject the better.

In this picture the dragonfly has been the subject of focus and the grass has been out of focus surrounding it making you look only at the Dragonfly.

 

This chart shows the focal point and circles of confusion, this is the light coming from the object to the cameras sensor to create the DOF.The light in this diagram shows the circle of confusion where by the amount of light let in by the aperture and hitting the cameras sensor will make the object in focus however if they hit the sensor slightly out then the subject could be out of focus. Getting the balance right by setting the aperture and the lens length right.

To get a wide DOF you would be aiming to get the whole subject in focus by using a smaller aperture F.22  as you would need less light but your lens would be aiming further away and the shutter speed would be slower around 1/30^th of  a second without a tripod if possible.

 

Half term passed and not had a minute to myself! Ive finally got a camera Canon 40D and bought a separate lens so I'm hoping to get out soon and take some shots for our task... In the mean time I have been reading up more about the aperture triangle and reiterating the basics to myself, DOF and functions on my camera in preparation.  While I was looking for a lens I wasn't sure what to get but after reading up on lenses I ended up going for a canon 24 to 85mm lens and with this, I get a varied focal lenght and not to long therefore I am able to get close up wide angle shots and telephoto images of around a 29 degree angle by focusing in on my subject.  Ive found this chart that gives you an idea on the focal lenghts of the lenses that you can buy as to be highest I had no clue and found this very helpful.

 

Wide angel I can get almost everything in the image, the foreground the subject and the skyline with no negative space, by having a lens that can also go to 85mm I can focus on my subject take the shot but get it in closer and squash it down.

Photoshop editing... I have been editing some of my images from our street photography last week.. I am new to Photoshop so it ill take me a while to get used to using it.  In these images I have adjusted the curve lines to brighten my image and I have burnt around the edges and by doing so I got a reflection on the image in the right hide side that I didn't have before it was edited.  Part of the image had a reflection of the person walking and people in the reflection however there was a white part on the wall not showing anything. 

By duplicating the layer I was able to edit the curves and brighten the image

Finally once I was happy with the picture I could save it and below is the final outcome of the picture.  These settings will take me a while to get used to I'm doing my best to take it all in. 

My film camera & Manual, Ive recently bought a canon EOS 300 and im getting used to using it now I have taken it out with me over the weekend and hope to get alot more use out of it by doing Street photography after this progect.

The manual I had been given is french however I have downloaded this one on line today...

Shooting from the hip.... St Helens, this task was so much fun walking around in the rain on the streets of St Helens snapping away.  I used a canon 550 digital set on B&W aperture F.8.... :) Not much going on that day however it was fun to walk round and people where a bit suspicious but before they got to look at you properly bang.... the shot was taken.  I had so much fun doing this, I concentrated on narrative on this project and camera angles where possible.

 

 

Yesterday I spent the day on the Albert Dock, Liverpool with my film camera, it rained the whole time I was there however I'm hoping that once developed my pictures come out on. At 1st I set the camera to Aperture Priorty but throught the day I played about with it more using The sunny 16 rule. I picked a day that was less busy as people where in work etc however I have taken a few with people in them.... See what happens hey :)

35mm Film photographers.  This week I we have been looking at photographers such as Alexander Rodchenko,  Josef, Koudelka & Henri Cartier-Bresson. These photographers have all used 35mm film to capture iconic images using reflection, movement, strange camera angles, while getting a natural image.

All of these images draw your eye all around the image & tell a story in this image by Josef Koudelka shows a lady who is sun bathing and her shadow is sharp under her, there's people about her doing various other things.  You can see that the sky was bright and that it was a sunny day when the picture was taken. 

This image taken in France also by Josef looks like its people from a circus having a break! Well that's what I got from it.....:) The rule of 3rd's is in there and there is a horizontal line running on the path in the centre going own the picture to the left corner, the guy in the centre is also leaning with the angle and the horse seems much better because of its positioning in the image. 

Here is an image take by Josef in Northern Ireland and its quite a dark image but good balance on the tree to the left and the bushes on the right hand side of the road. The road has lines leading out giving it perspective, what's round the bend? The markings on the road are brighter than the Gray and the darker shade of the tree & the bush. This gives me a lonely feeling as its dark and no one is in it.... 

 Eve Arnold has produced this image of a prostitute in a brothel in Cuba, the shallow DOF is on the prostitute and her drink concentrating on her look to create a feel of her emotions she looks sad and unhappy.  The background is out of focus making you concentrate on her. 

 Fritz Henle has this sharp repetitive image creating repetition and shadows in the picture, the narrative is simple I would of thought when you see this, school boys doing their exercises. There are lines horizontally & diagonally in this picture. 

Henri Cratier - Bresson would take pictures when people were just getting on with their everyday lives.  This top image - Squares, is an image of what looks like an school in a very run down building with small windows, Henri has also captured children playing in the court yard and what looks like a passer by walking in the middle.  Its telling a story and your looking at it thinking what is it? WHERE IS IT? WHERE IS THAT MAN GOING OR DOES HE WORK THERE? 

This image by Henri is amazing how he has the reflection of the bridge, the lady jumping into the water it looks staged, the balance of the colours are strong with the greys and whites, the reflection of the bridge is a circle split as the font of the boat has been captured in the image.

Shallow depth of field? Im still trying to understand my aperture triangle and I'm looking at images to get an idea of shallow depth of field and a wide depth of field.

In the top images the chest pieces are much closer and the outside is blurred and the narrow depth is concentrating on the chest pieces.

The bottom image is wider getting the staircase in an the stairs this is a much wider image and everything is in focus. 

My negatives scanned....

Here are some of my negatives that have been scanned onto the computer using a negative scanner.  I found the process long winded but I'm sure after a few goes it will be much simpler! These three images where taken in the local church in St Helen's.  It was raining and dark outside and my aperture settings where around F8 down to F4 but they still come out dark.
